to know that while Harvard opened in 1636, the first college to admit women did
not do so for another 200 years. Women did not begin attending college in equal

-Perhaps the most prominent example of an educated African American woman during colonial times was Phillis Wheatley Wheatley’s education was extremely rare for the 1700’s. The family that bought Wheatley taught her to read English, Greek and Latin. She also studied astronomy and geography.
